A recent study, conducted by Harris Interactive, and reported by the American Psychological Association, found that 75% of American adults are experiencing moderate to high levels of stress. For the first time, youth between the ages of 8 and 17 were included in the survey, and APA found that these preteens and teenagers are worrying too – and in greater numbers than their parents estimate. The survey found that children are experiencing their greatest worries about school and their family’s finances.

So what can you do to make it easier for your kids? Here are 7 tips to help you get started.

1. Don’t try to hide your concerns from your children – you really can’t anyway. They pick up signals from you even when you think you’re protecting them. At the same time, don’t burden them with pressures beyond their years and abilities to handle them.

2. As you all come face to face with your fears, keep the lines of communication open. Talk with your kids about their worries and let them know how you are handling yours. The more you are able to discuss the strains affecting all of you, the better you can all begin to cope with them.

3. When you begin to take action about the pressures, your children will feel comforted. Let them know you are capable of working together as a family to decrease the tensions you face. You may not be able to eliminate the anxiety everyone is experiencing, but you can make efforts to reduce it.

4. Help your children come up with a specific plan to address their concerns. Model for them how to create a strategy with a long-term goal and attainable short-term objectives to accomplish along the way. Remind them to create a Plan B to use when unavoidable obstacles arise.

5. Schedule stress reducing activities for your children and yourself. Physical activities will help decrease the levels of anxiety and depression you all may be experiencing. And even young children can be taught deep breathing exercises that bring about a greater sense of relaxation.

6. Work on having a more positive outlook. Think about what good can come out of the situation – maybe a greater degree of family solidarity and closeness. Encourage your children to be aware of and develop their internal strengths. And direct your focus to the light at the end of the tunnel.

7. Pay attention to unhealthy behaviors your kids may be exhibiting. If their actions involve excessive acting out, frequent conflicts, avoidant activities or the use of drugs or alcohol, they may be depressed. If these dysfunctional behaviors continue, consult a professional counselor trained to work with children.

If you are a Sandwiched Boomer, stressed by the poor economy as well as your family in flux, you may feel torn between the responsibilities of caring for your children and aging parents at the same time. Yet you’ll find that, when you let your children know you are there for them with support and encouragement, the entire family benefits. When you help your kids with their stress levels, yours will settle down too – so it’s a win-win for everyone.

The worst part about living in the entitlement mentality society we live in is that it often is the very culprit that leads to bad teen behavior. Teens see adults misbehaving and getting away with it. Company execs can run a company into the ground and still walk away with millions. Politicians can make costly mistakes and still get reelected. People can make an error and then sue someone else to recover from it. Perhaps we shouldn?t be too surprised at bad teen behavior, but if you want to turn it around with your teen, it?s not too late.

If you?re dealing with bad teen behavior in your teen there are some definitive steps you can follow to help change your teen?s attitude:

1. Talk More. Talking to your teen sends a message that you care. Even if you are talking about what will happen with that company exec or that politician, explaining that there are ramifications for their poor choices even if we don?t always hear about them in the news, you can have an impact. Talking is where it starts. Talk to your teen about his or her bad teen behavior; make sure your teens know that every choice they make about how to behave has a consequence. Tie privilege to behavior. If your teen is disrespectful and rude, refuses to do chores or respect curfew, is verbally abusive, or exhibits any other bad teen behavior, then your teen doesn?t deserve to have time out with friends on Friday night, a cell phone, or video games.

2. Set the Right Example. Bad teen behavior is learned. If your teen sees you trying to avoid taking responsibility for your mistakes, blaming others, or behaving poorly that?s the type of behavior they will mimic. If, on the other hand, they hear you apologize when you make a mistake, hear you take responsibility when something goes wrong, and see you treat others with respect, they?ll learn to do the same.

3. Consistency and Follow-Through. Making threats never works, and neither does yelling. If anything, the bad teen behavior will increase because your teen will lose respect for you. Instead, be calm, clear, and firm. Walk away rather than engage in fights. Set boundaries and stick with them. If your teen makes a choice to be disrespectful or break a rule and you?ve indicated that choice will have a consequence (no phone, no going out on the weekend) stick with it, follow through, and make sure the consequence is experienced.

Bad teen behavior is not something you can completely eradicate. As teens, it?s their job to push limits and test boundaries. But you can keep the behavior at a tolerable limit with a few changes in approach.

We cannot deny the fact that being shy is something that is common to lots of us, yet, for those people who are influenced by social anxiety disorder, they are obsessed with the idea that everyone will be criticizing them, and singling them out for being different in some way. Their fears are so intense that it tends to lead to the avoidance of all contact with groups of people where possible, which results in the deterioration of relationships and quality of life as a whole.

Teenagers who are socially challenged are always faced with the fear of doing something wrong and being harshly judged by others. They are almost paralyzed with worrying about what other people’s reactions to them will be. Consequently, they withdraw themselves and remain silent so as to draw as little attention to themselves as they can.

There are physical symptoms that are very apparent in teenagers who have social anxiety disorder. These teens tend to sweat excessively, blush and tremble. Aside from the physical symptoms, there are also behavioral symptoms that we can notice in them. For teens, the typical scenarios wherein they manifest social anxiety disorder are eating or drinking in the presence of other people, engaging in conversation with others, giving oral presentation, and attending social events.

As far as they are concerned, these situations present opportunities where they may be laughed at or criticized. It is worth noting though that all teens may excessively fear being criticized or laughed from time to time, as this is part of the normal process of growing up, but for those with social anxiety disorder, rather than this fear being occasional, it is with them all of the time.

When a teenager is suffering from social anxiety disorder, they are advised to seek the assistance of experts as soon as possible, so that they can be given with the treatment do deal with the social phobia. In doing so, affected teenagers can rid themselves of this debilitating condition. They will be able to get back to being a ‘normal’ teen and have a real chance of living a fulfilling life.

If you think that one of your family members or friends is suffering from social anxiety order, then you should take them to one side and let them know about your concerns. Tell that you care very much for them and that you want to help them live a happier a life. Be clear in stating that nothing that is happening is their fault, and that it is rather such phobias are not an uncommon occurrence. Give them as much time as they need, and do not pressure them into doing anything against their will.

Sedentary Activities

Television and video games are two of the biggest contributors to teen obesity. When given the choice, a lot of teens are more likely to choose sitting in front of the television, computer, or video game over any outdoor activity. We need to get back to backyard family soccer and football games. Sports are a great way to encourage more physical activity. Every increase in activity is a step in the right direction to burn more calories to begin a path that will guide us towards a healthier youth.

Another major contributor to teen obesity is the amount of junk food and sugary drinks/soda pop that are so readily available. Even as adults, a lot of the time it is easier to grab a candy bar than to take the time and effort to prepare something healthier, yet if you set the right example from a young age with your kids, it can be an important first step. One of the things that parents?and teens?have to realize is that it is never too late to change eating and activity habits. There are many negative effects teen obesity can have that will carry throughout their lifetime. It is common for obese teens to have problems with diabetes, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure. But health is not the only thing an obese teen struggles with. Obese teens often also face ridicule from their peers. While teen obesity is on the rise, there is still the model-thin mentality, especially among teen girls, thanks to the media. Being obese affects teen self confidence. It can lead to depression. The cost of being an obese teen is almost immeasurable. It can have a lifetime of lasting effects, both mental and physical.

There are so many health benefits to becoming more active and making more nutritious choices. Being healthy can have such a positive effect on the mental well-being that is so important for teens and their successful, healthy navigation through adolescence. It is important to find the right kind of motivation for each individual teen. Motivation is especially important in the beginning to be successful in making the lifestyle change necessary to achieve health and weight loss goals. Education

There does not seem to be any formal education or class for the important subject of teens and money in high school or even earlier. We live in a society drowning in debt and most of the world continues to recover from economic upheaval, yet there is no standard high school teens and money course that established the importance of responsibly handling finances. Personal Finance classes that are available in high school that teach kids how to balance a check book, but as most adults come to realize quickly enough, there is much more to financial success than keeping a checkbook in order.

The question is, then, whose responsibility it is to cover the subject of teens and money? Certainly parents need to take the responsibility, but there should also be some responsibility within our school systems. Teens need to learn how to handle money, how to use credit responsibly, and the consequences that they will face if they don?t take it seriously. Leading by example is critical, and open communications to your teens about money is equally valuable.

A major focus within the subject of teens and money should be how to use credit. Unfortunately, most teens have learned from example that even if you don?t have the money for what you want, you can just use a credit card! We need to teach teens restraint and patience with purchases, especially large ticket items. We need to teach teens that credit cards should be used only for emergencies. Instead of immediate gratification, we need to teach our teens to understand the value of saving up for something.

Savings

Teaching teens about money cannot happen without teaching them about savings. Savings is an integral part of educating teens on how to handle their finances. Children need to be taught from a young age the importance of saving money and setting financial goals for themselves, and eventually their own families. Teens need to be able to see the big picture. As parents, we need to find the way that works for each individual teen. We have to be able to reach out to them in a way that makes sense to them. You can start by simply giving younger children an allowance, allowing them to spend part but making them save some of it as well. If your teen gets a job, the same emphasis should be placed on requiring the teen to save some of the money earned ? make it a condition of you allowing them to have a job if you need to.

When parents have a teen that still wets the bed, the reaction of the parents is often to guard the disorder as a closely held secret of shame, as if the teen somehow has something wrong with him or her. But in almost every case of teen bedwetting, the problem is the same: inherited sleep patterns that cause the teen to sleep so deeply that the signal from the bladder cannot be detected.

If you are experiencing teen bedwetting issues, whether you are the parent or the teen, there are things you can do?and the first is to stop blaming yourself or being angry with yourself for failing to wake up in time to make it to the bathroom.

? Often, bedwetters are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, because the symptoms are similar to those of a deep-sleep disorder

By addressing the sleep pattern issues, the teen bedwetting issues can almost always be resolved, as well as any other sleep-related complications. Your local hospital should have information on sleep centers in your area that can help you determine the nature of your sleep issues. You can even begin addressing teen bedwetting problems with your family physician, who can prescribe medicines that help reduce the production of urine at night as well as other remedies for short-term help while you resolve the sleep pattern issues.

Teen bedwetting should not be an issue that gets tucked away in a closet as a closely-guarded family secret. The more we talk about the challenges teens face, the more likely it is that your teen will be better prepared to face challenges in the future, whether they are health-related or not.

Parents can take the sting out of bedwetting by reassuring their teen that the problem can be resolved. Make your teen as comfortable as possible at night by providing absorbent garments, protective sheets, and easy access to the bathroom. If you wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, wake your teen as well and you may be able to help him or her.

When you let your teen make mistakes, you do two things: you show that you trust your teen enough to let him or her try something on his or her own, and you let your teen learn from experience. Since the adage is true that experience is the best teacher, letting your teen make mistakes can help him or her develop instinct and decision-making ability.

When you let your teen make mistakes, it does not mean you are turning him or her loose without any guidance. It simply means that you are relinquishing some control over his or her life and allowing your teen to test the waters. It is the only way your teen will develop a sense of self and a level of independence to be a successful adult.

When you let your teen make mistakes, it also means that you allow your teen to be less than perfect. It literally means allowing your teen to be human, to be fallible, to be imperfect. It is an important allowance to make, in this world of airbrushed beauty and false images of perfection. Let your teen know that it is ok to make mistakes and ok to try new things, even if they are not successful. Teach your teen to approach life with a sense of humor and a sense of forgiveness.

Since the other way that teens learn best is by example, be willing to allow yourself to make mistakes, too. If you let your teen make mistakes, it won’t go over well if you are beating yourself up over making a mistake. Show your teen that you can forgive yourself, too, and your teen will be more likely to believe you when you forgive his or her mistakes as well.

Twenty-first century teens live in a different world than most of us grow up in. They have instant access to information and overexposure to the media. It’s not as simple as it was, but that does not mean you cannot still raise thoughtful, conscientious, productive teens. You won’t be able to protect them from everything, and its ok to let your teen make mistakes, because what is really important is being there to help them learn from the mistakes they make and apply what they learned to becoming better people.

As parents, you will never stop feeling the urge to protect your kids. One of the most difficult parts of being a parent is learning how to let go and let your teen become an individual person separate from you, but the satisfaction you will have as you watch your teen grow into an adult outweighs the fear you might experience of letting it happen.
