One of the unfortunate things that many of us are now dealing with are children that are overweight, and at times even obese. There are a number of different things that cause this problem, but it seems to be a growing problem among most of the population in developed lands. It is a combination of eating the wrong types of foods, including refined sugar and a lack of exercise. These are things that we may have taken for granted whenever we were children, and we tended to eat the right things naturally, along with getting outside to play.

Because of this problem, many parents and health professionals have decided that they would begin to put children on diets in order to help them to lose weight. At times, some of these diets may have been very restrictive and you would probably be surprised with exactly how difficult it is for anybody to stay on one of these diets, let alone a child. That is why it may be necessary to reevaluate dieting for children, and look at it from a different angle than what you may typically see in the mainstream. This may make the difference in seeing success in helping your child lose weight, or simply seeing the same thing that everybody else is seeing.

One of the first things that I am going to say is, most children are not going to have the ability to stick with a restrictive diet for a long time. Even if you can force the diet strictly, they’re still going to find a way to circumvent it and whenever the opportunity presents itself, they will simply indulge. That is why it is necessary for you to make sure that any dieting for children that you have established is going to be easy for them to do, and it will not seem as if they are dieting at all.

The reality of it is, the world around us is full of foods and drinks that are bad for us along a number of different lines. There is even some research to show that diet drinks which contain artificial sweeteners are also contributing to this problem. If you are able to get your child on a healthy diet, however, which still has a little bit of room for indulgence from time to time, you will find that they are much better able to stick with it and to develop healthy habits that will last throughout their lifetime.

One final note is, you should not overlook the possibility of getting your child some exercise as well. This is something that the entire family can benefit from, as you can exercise together and would enjoy some time away from the TV. Not only that, exercise habits that are developed at a young age tend to stick around for the long term, and you are giving your child something in addition to dieting that will be able to help them to maintain their weight for the rest of their life.

Everyone who has ever parented a child to adulthood knows the truth of the old adage,

“parenting a teenager is like trying to nail gelatin to a tree.”

I am parenting my third teen and have lived the truth of this statement. I have to tell you, I have genuinely enjoyed parenting my teenagers, but there are some real no-no’s I have learned along the way which improved the odds of my teenager enjoyment.

If you are looking for advice for parenting problem teenagers, then you already know how tense things in your home.

So for those of you swimming in challenging teen waters, here are some scenarios you might want to avoid. Especially if your teen has already shown herself to be less then mature.

– Don’t go out of town for the weekend.

Not and leave your teen alone in your home. Not if you don’t want your house to be the weekend “party house”.

If your teenager has already cracked the trust relationship between the two of you, this is NOT the scenario to let him “prove” himself on. Sometimes a teen has no intention of challenging the family rules but a ‘friend’ talks him into it.

Your teen needs your guidance and wisdom, not a lack of boundaries.

– Don’t put her in charge of painting the house.

Or any other large and important project. That is simply a recipe for disaster and disappointment.

However, she does need to be involved in helping you conquer these large projects. How else will she learn household management, organizing a project, setting goals and subgoals, self-initiative, working within a budget, cooperating with a team, and the satisfaction of a job well done? And that’s just for starters.

What? Your surly teenager says he doesn’t WANT to be involved in these types of projects? You’re not listening to that whining, are you? Get him a copy of the children’s story “The Little Red Hen” and yes, read it together.

– Don’t give her your credit card.

I’m always surprised by the number of parents who stress over their problem teen’s behavior and then turn around and hand her their credit card because “it’s so much more convenient”.

Do you also find yelling, screaming and heartache convenient? Not to mention a ruined credit score?

Teenagers definitely need to learn fiscal responsibility, but starting out with a credit card (either yours or theirs) is not the way to go. Not if you are interested in sleeping nights.

– Don’t be surprised by anything they do.

This parenting tip directly relates to the adage at the beginning of this article. Teens, by their very nature are unpredictable, impulsive, and make regular errors in judgment.

So don’t be surprised by anything they do. And don’t be so naive as to think your teen has it all figured out. He doesn’t. He doesn’t even know what that would look like.

There is significant brain research that has shown that the teen brain is still developing, especially the regions that control impulsivity and judgment. (For more fascinating information on these studies, see http://pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/teenbrain/work/onereason.html.)

In a nutshell, our beloved teens are not finished growing yet! They need compassion…and boundaries. Understanding…and accountability. Hugs…and lots of listening as they process the complexities of growing up.

Set up family times that your teen will *want* to be a part of, even secretly. Invite, but don’t beg him to join you. Invite his friends. And when you get the chance, listen very carefully to what your teen has to say. Ask questions relating to issues that are important to your teen and then listen attentively and respectively to their answers. Believe me, your teen will take notice of your interest in him and that is irresistible over the long haul.

The best advice for parenting problem teenagers I can offer you is to remember YOU are the adult, not them. They need your perspective, wisdom, compassion, tough love and unfailing belief in them.

That’s how they know they can trust and respect you, and once your teen respects you, you will be able to enjoy being a parent again.

If you are having difficulty with your child?s behaviour at school, you can sometimes be at a loss of what to do about it. After all what can you do from a distance if you are not in the class? It is vital that the teacher knows how to use effective strategies of managing behaviour in the class, but you do have the power to make a difference if you work with the teacher. A teacher can not single out one child to give special attention or rewards so this is where you come in. While you can?t make a contribution in the class you can make a huge difference by doing certain things when they are at home. these principles are ideal for all ages of children just, however this example is aimed at the younger child and you can adapt it to suit your child’s age.

If for instance the teacher says to you,? Your little Charlie won?t listen to a word I say and is always pushing the other children,? this is what I suggest that you do.

1 Make an appointment to see your child?s teacher in private without your child at a mutually convenient time.

2. When you see the teacher ask them what they see the problem as being. Lets say it?s Charlie won?t listen and pushes the other children.

3. Ask the teacher to work on one problem at a time with you, you might like to ask her which one. Lets use Listening to the teacher.

4. Tell the teacher that you will give Charlie some rules about listening when the teacher is talking and that you will show him how to do this when he is at home, by taking turns when others are talking and waiting for them to finish and encouraging hime to listen to you.

5. Ask the teacher to tell you each day how he has got on, particularily any improvements no matter how slight. Remember to ask the teacher for the best way to do this. She might use a home school diary or say that you can see her at the end of class on certain day?s or daily.

6. Ask the teacher if there is anything else that they would like you to do?

7. After the meeting talk to your child and explain some rules about listening in class, make this positive and point out something that they are doing well, such as the teacher says that you are really good at drawing. You could say that the teacher would like you to sit and listen some more and how great it would be to show the teacher just how good you are at sitting and listening.

8. Use some form of praise and rewards system to encourage this good behaviour, ie sticker charts. When you get a positive response from the teacher that your child has listened more, you can give lots of verbal praise and perhaps a reward such as a trip to the park on the way home or a sticker to show how pleased you are.

9. As you see improvements and the teacher says that the problem is solved or very much better, you can talk again with the teacher about any other issues.

This method will help to focus on the behaviour that you want from your child which encourages more of that behaviour and makes your child more willing to cooperate.

It requires a lot of responsibility to be a parent. Not only is it important to meet basic needs but parents must also help to nurture good behavior so that children grow up to be responsible citizens.

It all begins with discipline. There are many ways in which you and your spouse can come to a compromise about dealing with discipline in your home. Use these tips to help raise your own happy, obedient child.

Always have your arguments away from your children. At least be responsible enough to discuss contentious issues outside of your child’s hearing. Any marriage has its’ share of arguments but make an effort to argue in private and away from the kids. It is hurtful to the child and it also lets them know that there is a weakness in the discipline realm, which may then lead to the child getting away with more! Take care to have your arguments quietly and privately.

Sometimes it helps in dealing with a bad situation to put a name on it. Discipline problems in children occur mainly because the parents are inconsistent with parenting the child. Both parents need to sit down and agree on what the problem is at hand.

Do your kids have chores they are responsible for doing? Do you sense a deficiency in the level of respect? Do you suspect your child is being less than honest with you? All these listed issues may cause problems with how the initial behavior was addressed.

If you can figure out the problem that needs to be fixed, you will have a better chance of dealing with the discipline problem.

It is time to review options and choose the best one. Negative consequences come from negative behaviors. If your child is behaving badly, he or she needs to understand their behavior and accept the consequences. This requires approval from the two of you. Some discipline ideas could be extra chores, apology notes, grounding, loss of privileges and so on.

It is very important that the discipline administered is fitting to the degree of bad behavior. For example, if a child doesn’t finish the laundry he shouldn’t lose his soccer privileges forever. Don?t choose a privilege that he loves, it may be a bit harsh. The two of you need to communicate and compromise with each other to resolve problems regarding children misbehavior. That’s vital (and you both must strongly support the decision. Otherwise, the child will manipulate either parent and the discipline will fall by the wayside.)

Do your best work all the time, or not at all. Being consistent with discipline means to set clear expectations for your children and then stick to them. The child should know what to expect if he or she goes out of line. The rule is to be consistent and unwavering. This way the child will learn that there are always consequences for inappropriate behavior.
