However there are health concerns that are vocalized by many about letting your kids sit too close to the TV. These were raised in the early days of television when the TV was often affectionately referred to as a radiation box. Obviously there was no radiation danger from watching TV and the technology has advanced beyond what it was originally.

Still the questions about whether it’s harmful to watch TV for too long, or sit too close remain. If you’re child is not physically active and spends all of his or her time in front of the TV then obviously they will begin to get a little heavy. In this aspect the question about if it is harmful is a definite yes. It’s important for kids to get out and have plenty of physical activity in order to grow and develop properly.

As far as the question about sitting too close to the TV goes the answer is a bit complicated. However you can answer most of it yourself with some common sense knowledge. If you work on a computer, or use a laptop for long periods of time and sit too close what happens to your eyes? They become itchy, red, irritated, and your vision becomes blurred.

Now if that happens to you who are fully grown, imagine what it might be doing to your kids. This isn’t a scare argument, but more of a common sense argument. Children and toddlers often don’t understand the concept of letting your eyes rest so it’s important to manage this for them until they understand. Continued long term watching regardless of range can lead to long term headaches and migraines.

That covers the physical part of the question, but what about the mental part? Yes there is a mental part to this question that most parents simply do not think about. If you let your child or toddler sit real close and directly in front of the TV they will begin to think it’s theirs. This can lead to behavioral problems down the line and cause quite a few issues.?

Before you dismiss this as silly remember how children learn what’s theirs and what’s not. When you hand them a new, they grab it, and it becomes theirs. If you sit them in front of the TV alone and leave them then they will assume this box with the colorful moving pictures is theirs as well. Being up close and directly in front of it will reinforce this position as well.

In order to prevent this from happening it’s important to teach them that it’s not theirs. This works the same way you teach them that other things are not theirs. You typically sit them at an angle from the TV where they can see it, but not directly in front of it. When they move closer or try to touch it you simply pick them up and put them back. So is it harmful for your child to sit too close to the TV? Physically it can be straining on the eyes so yes, but in the end use your own parental judgment.?

Meconium is the first stool of an infant that occurs within the first twenty-four hours of birth. It is composed of materials that were ingested while in the womb. The meconium is sticky, black, and odorless and will be followed by many color changes in future feces. Newborns should poop at least one or two times a day. After eight weeks, newborns may only poop every couple of days.

The number of bowel movements mainly depends on whether the baby is breastfed or on formula. Babies on breast milk tend to poop more frequently. Newborn constipation is when a baby does not poop for over a week and the feces is hard. Constipation can be due to not eating enough, what the baby is eating, or just the digestive system adjusting to not being in the womb. Constipation in newborns can be treated when detected.

Constipation can be detected by frequent strain and difficulty. Grunting actually does not indicate constipation, newborns grunt a lot. Grunting is a way in which they communicate and learn to use sound. Babies also grunt as the anal muscles stretch, but it is not painful because the muscles are meant to stretch. If the poop is dry and hard like pebbles, this indicates that the baby is constipated. Also, if the babies bring their legs up to their chest frequently and their face turns red when having a bowel movement or trying to have bowel movement, this indicates constipation.

One possible cause of constipation is switching from breast milk to formula. Babies’ digestive systems are very sensitive to change. Formula contains more iron than breast milk; therefore a side effect is constipation. After four to six months babies start to eat cereal, which can bind their systems and cause constipation. After rice cereal they then switch to solids foods. Solid foods that are low in fiber can bind and block a child’s digestive system too. Potatoes and bananas are at the top of the list for causing constipation in newborns. There are quite a few causes to constipation in newborns.

Newborns have a lot of adjustments to make in the first year of their life. Hopefully, reducing constipation is not so difficult to them. The treatments and effectiveness vary for each baby. Trying new foods such as prunes, peas, and peaches are high in fiber, therefore they help treat constipation. Another suggestion is to mix one ounce prune juice with one ounce of water. Always consult with a doctor before trying the mixture of water with anything. Water can be harmful to infants. Other effective treatments include mixing prunes and oatmeal together and diluted apple juice in a bottle. In addition to food treatments, physical treatments can also be helpful. Try moving the baby’s legs in circles, as if riding a bike and gently massage the lower stomach. Warm baths may also help the baby poop. If the baby does not poop within two days of these treatments, call your doctor. Constipation can be very uncomfortable for babies, so parents need to find the most effective treatment for their infant by process of elimination.

In the last century, the model of the average family moved progressively into the small nuclear families that we mostly see today. This is true perhaps more than any other time in history. As a result, many of today’s families struggle to maintain a healthy and functioning family unit and to cope with the challenges that life throws at them.

Most of the children in our schools are dealing with blended families, single-parent families, families with no support from extended family members and families that are on the brink of a split. This does not mean that things are all negative for every family. There are many families that have not, and are not dealing with these issues. Yet on some level, they have to carefully navigate their way around family life in the 21st century.

In the not too distant past, the majority of families lived in the rural areas of the country. In these households, everyone pitched in to complete the many tasks to be done around the home. Children did not begin work at the age of 14, which is the legal minimum working age in most places. Rather, they began to take on chores as soon as they were physically able; at a very young age compared to today’s standards. For young girls, these tasks often included cooking. Even today, cooking is a daily household task that our children can still reasonably get involved in. It is a household task that can be fun for children and that is packed with a host of other benefits.

There are stresses involved in having a nuclear family that don’t necessarily present themselves in households that have lots of extended family around. Taking care of these extra stresses can at times provide fewer opportunities for parents to spend time with their children and to bond. Families that cook together can use this activity to bond and to kills many other birds with one stone.

Benefits of Parents and Children Cooking Together:

? Family recipes can be passed on from parents to children with a sense of heritage

Many individuals and families in today’s society, are struggling with issues related to diet. A combination of social factors contributes to this rise in obesity which is currently at unseen levels. Excess weight leads to many illnesses which places huge strain on the healthcare system. Many governments are attempting to counter this epidemic through educational and awareness campaigns.

A great way for your family to stay healthy and to keep your weight at normal levels is to cook your meals at home. Parents can further educate their children on making healthy food choices by chatting about the ingredients they are using while cooking meals together. If your children learn how to eat well and enjoy healthy foods at a young age, they are much more likely to continue this trend as they grow older and when they start families of their own.
