While home schooling a dyslexic child has no shortage of challenges, your task of teaching your dyslexic child at home can become easier and more rewarding with the right tools.

Sure, you’ll still have your share of setbacks, but it’s so rewarding when you finally see those little breakthroughs suddenly develop into major a progression in your child’s comprehension.

First of all, just what is Dyslexia? According to Answers.com, Dyslexia is a learning disability characterized by problems in reading, spelling, writing, speaking, or listening. In many cases, dyslexia appears to be inherited.

Dyslexic children seem to have trouble learning early reading skills, problems hearing individual sounds in words, analyzing whole words in parts, and blending sounds into words. Letters such as “d” and “b” may be confused.

Often, a person with dyslexia has a problem translating language into thought (such as in listening or reading), or translating thought into language (such as in writing or speaking).

If you are just starting to teach your dyslexic child, you must remember one thing. Your child is not retarded. His brain is just wired a little differently. Many famous people like Edison, Einstein and Churchill were all dyslexics. It is not a death sentence. People with dyslexia can live rewarding, productive lives.

Being dyslexic does mean that your child will have to work harder than his peers to learn basic language skills. You may have noticed problems with his speech at a young age. This is typical.

Also many dyslexics often have trouble concentrating, especially when they have no interest in the subject. They tend to learn better with hands-on (kinesthetic) methods. Games that teach language skills are quite helpful.

Within academic circles there is much discussion about what is the best way to teach a dyslexic. Some say to use phonics while others promote the whole language method. I’m going to tell you to do both. Hit it from all angles. Find out what works best with your child. Every child is different.

There are many programs that may be beneficial. These include Sequential Spelling, Spell to Read and Write, or All About Spelling. Sequential Spelling teaches spelling patterns and builds on those patterns.

Spell to Write and Read teaches all the phonograms first, then combining phonograms (letters or groups of letters associated with a sound) to build words. All About Spelling also begins with the phonograms and then moves on to syllables then words. All of these programs are reasonably priced.

Barten, Wilson and ABC Reading are also good and are all based on the Orten-Gillingham approach. This method is language-based, multisensory, sequential, systematic and has produced good results.

The Orten-Gillingham method starts by having the student read and write the basic letter sounds. The student learns short vowel sounds and consonant sounds. Simple words are learned first.

Once the easy C-A-T type words are learned, then they move on to long vowels, diphthongs (vowels that make two gliding speech sounds which are usually interpreted as one, ex. Oi,oy), digraphs ( two vowels that make one sound ) and blends. Spelling is learned right along with reading. Review is continuous.

After the student has mastered words, then the same type of systematic approach is used for learning vocabulary, sentence structure, reading comprehension, and composition. Again, review is continuous.

While all of the above mentioned programs are good, it may be you are looking for a less expensive way of helping your child. It is not that difficult but you must be willing to devote a lot of time to your child.

First you get a listing of the basic phonemes of the English language (in Noah Webster’s Reading/Spelling Handbook, for example). Phonemes are basic units of sound (ex. B,t,ph,th,s,a,i) that are capable of conveying a distinction in meaning.

You will also need some cards or tiles with letters on them. Using the handbook as your guide, teach your child the long and short vowels, consonants, blends, diphthongs and digraphs.

Start with the short vowel words. Play games with the letters. For example, make the word “tap”. Have your child read and spell the word. Then tell him to reverse the letters and ask him what word he has made. “Pat”. Have him make different words by changing a vowel or consonant.

Once he has mastered the short vowel words move on to the long vowel words. This kind of exercise will help your child understand the patterns in the English language.

Not all dyslexic children are the same. Some are effected by this problem only mildly, some moderately and some severely. The severity of your child’s problem, his age and past educational history all factor in when deciding how to help your child.

So don’t let those bumps in the road discourage you. It’s kind of a cliche’, but two steps forward, one step back is still progress. With all the helps that are available nowadays, your task of teaching your dyslexic child at home has become less daunting and more rewarding.

Baby Sign Language could prove to be very beneficial for premature babies as they are in a higher risk category for developing a speech delay. Baby Sign Language involves using keyword signs to engage in two way communication with pre-verbal babies. The experts believe that it enhances speech development if used in conjunction with the spoken word. Although many parents are using it for the enjoyment it provides, there could well be added benefit for those who are already at a developmental disadvantage.

Baby Sign Language is being used worldwide to communicate with hearing babies before they can speak. Researchers have shown that using sign language gestures with the spoken word enhances the speech development of the child. This doesn?t mean that it is a program to create super babies; it simply provides them with a good foundation for early learning.
Language development is essential for developing appropriate social skills. If a child is particularly at risk of suffering from a speech delay they may benefit from having a supplementary communication tool such as baby sign language.

Using sign language to bridge the communication gap could be particularly useful in premature babies as they follow slightly delayed developmental milestones due to their early entry into the world. Premature babies are generally assessed developmentally against an adjusted age. But when premature babies are compared to other babies by their chronological age, they may be slightly disadvantaged with their speech development. When this is the case, baby sign language could be used to accelerate the learning process and enhance their communication abilities, allowing them to interact socially and appropriately with children in the same chronological age group.

Baby Sign Language should always be used with the spoken word and should never replace the need to speak the associated word. When teaching baby sign language it is important to emphasize the word that is being signed. It is this close interaction with the parent that is thought to enhance the speech development more so than the use of the sign language itself. Children who are at higher risk of developing a speech delay will gain the most benefit from this positive interaction involving extensive use of the spoken language. As the child is able to sign back to the adult and establish two way communications for the first time, they are likely to understand the value and reward of being understood. This is a time to encourage and praise your child so that you perpetuate the benefits and enhance their progress.

If your child is not meeting the speech development milestones you should seek advice from your pediatrician. If it does turn out to be the case that your child is suffering from delayed speech the sign language will be a huge benefit. Every child follows their own unique developmental timeline. Your baby should be able to be understood at 31 months by the members in their family. If this isn?t the case it might be time to seek help.

The transition is usually progressive. The baby will be able to speak and sign a few words. They may choose to combine a spoken word with a baby sign to get their point across. As they begin to communicate in sentences, they may try putting several words or several signs together. Once they have reached this stage, mostly children will chose to drop the sign and just use the word. They may revert back to the signs when they are tired but eventually they will go on to use more complicated sentences and the signs will be obsolete.

This will all happen naturally, the only thing you need to do is support their speech development by talking to them often. Baby Sign Language can be a wonderful tool to help in the progression to speech.
Premature babies and other babies that are at an increased risk of developing a speech delay can enjoy the benefits of baby sign language by incorporating a few simple signs into their daily routine.

Imagine a world without speech; where you knew exactly what you wanted but had no way of expressing these needs to the people around you. This is the reality for our babies and toddlers before they learn to talk. They suffer the limitations of a world without speech. By 6 months of age they know exactly what they want but have no means of communicating this to you. There is no wonder they become frustrated. Even when they do begin to talk, it is some time before they are able to get their little mouths around all the words that they will need to express themselves effectively. Baby Sign Language can help to ease this frustration by providing a means of communication to bridge the gap.

Baby Sign Language is based on ?keyword signing? and involves the use of simple gestures for words that are important to the baby. Each gesture is to be used with repetition of the associated spoken word making babies more interested in the meaning of keywords from an earlier age. It should never replace the need for the spoken word.

Baby Sign Language is becoming increasingly popular. Many people won?t realise that its use is supported by over 30 years of research. Some people who do not recognise the long term benefits of signing with their hearing babies may be excused for thinking that it is a fad or the latest passing trend in modern parenting. However the research is clear and the parents already using Baby Sign Language are united. It is a very simple solution to a very frustrating problem.

Infants already use an extensive range of facial expressions and body language to communicate with their parents and Baby Sign Language is a natural extension of this behaviour. They squirm when they are uncomfortable; put their arms up to be picked up when you walk by and later they learn to point at things.

Babies are fascinated with movement, especially when the movement is performed by a parent. In the beginning the baby will associate the movement with the word. In the case of ?milk?, this association is made easily as they are rewarded with their favourite comfort and associate this with the gesture. This ties it all together; the use of the gesture and the spoken word followed through with the actual item.

The first step is having them understand what you are signing to them. It is suggested that you only use one sign such as the sign for ?milk? at this early stage so they don?t become confused. You can begin this as early as 3-4 months of age. With the sign for ?milk? it is easy to recognise that you have been understood when they go into flapping frenzy and get excited. By about 8-9 months of age they will be able to ask for ?milk? by replicating the sign. As a parent this is just as exciting as any other milestone they reach. Once they are able to sign back to you, slowly introduce another sign or two until you develop a vocabulary for all the important things you would like to communicate.

Growth and brain development during these early years, especially the first 2 years is more rapid than at any other stage of a child?s life. One of the most crucial milestones in a child?s development is the development of their social skills and the ability to interact appropriately with others. The basis for appropriate social interaction is effective communication. The benefits of Baby Sign Language also include earlier communication, reduced frustration, increased language comprehension and further opportunities for bonding between parent and baby.

Teaching Baby Sign Language also teaches your child that there is more to communication and social interaction than just words. Effective communication does involve hand gestures, body movements and facial expression. Being a visual language it is fascinating to children as it stimulates their curiosity and attentiveness towards further communication.

Some parents express concern that using Sign Language may inhibit the speech development of their child. There is no cause for concern however; because you are using ?keyword signing? you are enhancing the comprehension of the word not replacing the need for spoken language. It is very important that you continue to use the spoken word with the gestures to enhance the speech development. National Institute of Health funded research demonstrated that babies who were using Baby Sign Language were able to communicate with spoken language 3 months earlier than babies who were not. Even more astounding was the fact that these same children went on to develop language comprehension skills that were 12 months ahead of their peers by the time they reached school age. The easiest way of teaching toddlers to talk is using Baby Sign Language from a very early age.

Parenting is difficult at the best of times but sometimes we need some strategies to help us cope with trying situations and to help us to mold acceptable behaviour for our children. There is no doubt that discipline, especially in reference to very young children is at best a contentious issue, however with the help of parenting programs on television and the wealth of information available online it is becoming widely accepted that sometimes we need more than just a plan to do well. One of the most talked about methods for disciplining our children is the use of Time-Out for behaviour management.

Time-out is becoming the most successful and effective discipline method used by parents, caregivers and childcare centres around the world. One of the reasons this Time-out method works so well is that it removes the child from the situation immediately and allows both the parent and the child to calm down before the situation escalates out of control.

In order to use the Time-out method you need to have a plan up front. Decide what situations are going to warrant the method and how long they are going to be in time-out for. Pick your battles; initially try to focus on the behaviour that you feel it is most important for your toddler to change. It might be as severe as biting or hitting or it could be something like saying a naughty word. Make sure that you are consistent whatever it is. Then you need to decide where your Time-out area is going to be. Make sure that it is somewhere away from distractions where they are unable to do damage to themselves, others or any property. Try to avoid using the bed or cot as a Time-out area as this may lead them to have a negative association with their bed and lead to sleep problems later on.

To implement the Time-out strategy, wait until the particular behaviour presents itself. Take the child to the Time-out area or their Time-out Mat. Get down on your child?s level and explain to them why they have been placed in that area and how long they need to stay there for. Also explain to them what they need to do when that time is up, which may be apologise, clean up their room or undo the mess that they just created. When the time is up return to them, accept their apology, share a cuddle and get on with what it is you need to be doing. The more frequently and consistently the method is used the less it will be required. Be sure to praise good behaviour if they prevent themselves for going to the Time-out spot by self regulating their behaviour, this will go a long way to improving their behaviour in the longer term.

A good rule of thumb is one minute for each year of their age. Explain this to the child and how it is going to work. Some parent?s like to use aids to reinforce the consistency of the Time-out method such as a timer that the child holds so they know how long they need to stay in the Time-out for. This is also a good idea as it gives them something to do with their hands as they think about what they have done and the consequences of their actions.

Another very useful aid to use in Time-out is a Time-out Mat. Children naturally will develop a very strong association between the Time-out Mat and the fact that they are being disciplined for their behaviour. To have the ability to take this discipline measure with you when you are on the go is a huge advantage as it adds to the consistency of the method and provides you with a handy and quick solution to avert and disperse a situation while you are out in public. As parents we also spend much more time away from the home these days as we try to juggle the demands of family life, social life, work and extracurricular activities so a portable solution is very convenient.

It is never too early to begin using Time-out with your baby or toddler. Remember that you are not being mean or nasty; you are helping them develop into resilient and happy children who know how to behave responsibly and are able to self regulate and show self discipline.

Baby Sign Language is a communication method designed to be used with hearing babies and toddlers before they can speak. It is a simplified version of sign language designed to be easy enough for baby’s to use from 6 months of age. The baby signs are often borrowed or modified from traditional sign language. These baby signs are based on gestures that symbolize the action or meaning of a word and are designed so that they can be understood even if you don?t know any sign language at all. Baby Sign Language can be taught from birth although most children have the necessary hand eye co-ordination to begin signing back to their parents and caregivers by the age of 6 months. As most babies don’t begin talking until they are between 9 – 12 months of age, Baby Sign Language gives the child a significant head start on two way communication. This milestone may seem to be a small advantage to begin with however research has shown that this small advantage flows through to have larger developmental impact later on in life.

NIH Funded Baby Sign Language Experimental Studies

Baby Sign Language is not a new concept, although it still receives much media attention around the world. The first Baby Sign Language studies were conducted as early as 1989. One of the most highly regarded and a frequently referenced experimental study is a National Institute of Health (NIH) funded study conducted by Drs Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn. This study was designed to determine the benefits of Baby Sign Language. The aim was to determine if Baby Sign Language would delay speech development in children. The children recruited into the study were assigned into two groups; the first group consisted of children that used Baby Sign Language and the second group consisted of children that did not. The children were recruited for the study at eleven months of age. Their speech and language development was followed up until they reached three years of age.

The study regularly assessed the speech and language development of the children. Language assessments were designed to measure language comprehension and language production. These assessments were conducted at assigned intervals during the study and measured the children?s ability to put words into sentences. The child?s intellectual development was also measured at 24 months.

The average scores of children in the study that were in the group that used Baby Sign Language were found to be higher than the control group who did not. By the age of twenty-four months, the signing children had a developmental advantage of three months over the non-signing children. By the time these signing children reached the age of thirty-six months, this advantage had increased dramatically from a three month developmental advantage to an equivalent twelve month advantage in their overall language skills and comprehension.

Since this research was conducted in 1989 there have been many families that use Baby Sign Language in their home. To date there hasn’t been a single study that has shown there to be any disadvantages from using Baby Sign Language. Many childcare centres are also using Baby Sign Language as part of a dedicated program.

Some parents may be concerned if they use Baby Sign Language with their children that it may delay their speech development. The results of the NIH funded study demonstrate quite clearly that this is not the case. Baby Sign Language facilitates communication between baby and parent earlier in life and is thought by some to be an essential step in the learning process. Baby Sign Language aids in the comprehension of words through actions that they understand. By providing a communication method to the baby earlier in life they understand the benefit of communication as they are rewarded with some control over their environment and their needs. This only leads on to a thirst for a more complicated language which is thought to be the reason that baby’s who sign with their parents speak earlier than those who do not.

As adults it is important to remember that the language we use can have a major impact on the way it is interpreted by a child.

Perhaps you may want your child to finish his or her dinner and the child finds it?s quite amusing to play with the food by throwing it. You then raise your voice and say ?Don?t throw your food? the interesting thing is that your child will not register the ?Don?t? That is because the brain cannot process negatives. The child hears ?Throw your food? Whatever you say to yourself consciously you?re unconscious will seek to prove you right. There is a part of your brain called the Reticular Activating System and it will work even if what you are saying is negative.

As you read this have a go now to see how this works:

?Don?t think of the queen??

You will either have an image of the Queen or you may hear the sound of her voice or perhaps have a feeling towards her. Your brain will scan through all its memories and find something associated with the queen and then go oops I?m not meant to think about that. Therefore you have to do it in order to not do it. So it is important to remember to focus on the things you do want as opposed to the things you don?t want.

You could say to your child, ?Quickly finish the food so we can play together? and have them focus on playing together after they?ve finished their food.

You may ask your child to go and clean their room. For a child this can be very a big demand. They become lost and the task just appears far too big, their concentration levels aren?t as high as adults. It helps to break it down for example to ask them to pick up their clothes off the floor, do the bed up etc.

A clever way that I found works with children that makes them feel they are making the decision but in fact the end result is what you want. In NLP we call it a double bind. It basically is a set of options where the individual feels they are making the choice. For example if I want my child to go to bed I will say would you like to go to bed at 8.15 or 8.30 they will always say the latter. I want them to be in bed by half eight but they are left feeling they are in control and have made the choice. For example;

Would you like to do your homework now or in 10 minutes?

Would you like to read a book or write a story?

Would you like a bath or shower?

Do you want to play on the Playstation or go on the Computer?

The language we use is very important the chid will live up to whatever we tell him or her. If you say to your child consistently that you?re not confident or we talk about the child as not very confident to others they will feel they have a label and will live up to it. Alternatively if you say to your child ?You?re a genius? they will start to believe that and produce even better results.

When studying a foreign language, it?s natural to run into bouts of frustration. Even with the most dynamic language learning software, the difficulty of understanding the rules of grammar and memorizing the vocabulary does get to you at one time or another.

During these times, it might actually benefit you to take a short break from active studying and look for ways to pick up the language naturally. Instead of following a course, just begin immersing yourself into it more. Try these activities on for size:

Converse in it every chance you get. Try to get into as much conversations using the vernacular as you can. If you don?t come across a lot of folks who speak the language, intentionally seek them out. Find a local community of people who speak it (if you?re practicing Hindu, for instance, find a local Indian community) and patronize their businesses (restaurants, groceries, etc), practicing your skills whenever you come in. Most will appreciate your learning efforts and help you out.

Watch movies and TV shows in that language. Instead of watching another cat video on YouTube, why not spend the afternoon watching entertainment clips in the vernacular you?re trying to learn? You might even chance upon something you like.

Immersion can feel a lot less like studying and more about enjoying yourself. Most of the time, it?s got a social component that makes it even more interesting. As such, it usually feels less restricting and more open, possibly re-igniting your fire in learning the new language.

What?s the hardest language to learn?

According to a report by the British Foreign Office, based on a study of British diplomats and embassy staff who have undegrone language training, students had the most difficult time with Hungarian, followed closely by Japanese. By no means does it imply they the most complicated languages in existence (although they are pretty daunting). For the most part, it?s an indication that the British form of English is so far removed from those two that it requires a whole redefinition of their language map in order to achieve any form of proficiency.

Chinese speakers, for instance, will probably have an easier time with learning Japanese, since that language uses a number of Chinese characters in its own alphabet, along with sharing some similar constructs. Yet, it doesn?t make Japanese the easiest language to learn in the world, either. Your native tongue?s proximity to the language you want to study is well beyond your control. As such, there is no point focusing on a language?s difficulty when it comes to its relationship with another.

Natural aptitude is often cited as a factor in language learning. While this may have some merit, aptitude also plays a huge part in learning computer science, the arts and pretty much every field of study. Like the relationship of your language to another, your inborn talents are not exactly under your command.

As with most fields of education, it?s important to focus your language learning on factors that you actually have a hand in, such as the amount of practice you put in and the quality of the instruction that you get. So what?s the hardest language to learn? It?s whatever language that doesn?t interest you enough to put in the effort. As long as you?re willing to study a subject, after all (whether you do it in a classroom or on your own with a language software), and give it the attention it deserves, you?ll eventually find success.

There is only one important factor in language learning and that is you.
