No matter where you live or how much money is in your savings account, the basic things that children need can be provided for by loving parents. Yes, children can make the lack of money more frustrating and more noticeable but there is more to a family than finances. In a perfect world, everybody would have the house, SUV, fenced in yard, bulging 401K and the rainy day funds to weather any storm life has to offer. But, for most people with integrity and morals, they get by during a recession just fine. While having a child may be expensive, for most couples it is a replacement for other things that are expensive like getting your nails done or having a useless golf membership. (Sorry guys) The adage, the more you make the more you spend stands true and waiting until you make more only indicates that it will take more to support you. This forces you in to an endless circle of thinking and rethinking the choice to start your family. And when one day finally comes, when the world is financially balanced ? it might just be too late.

As expensive as children are to raise, it shouldn?t cause this feeling of doom for couples thinking about a family. You have to have some faith in your abilities, your support system and in the sheer evidence that your previous life has given you ? which is that you will be okay and provided for. No, not the law of attraction where you imagine your future and wait for it to fall into your lap ? but the law of life that has proven to give you more than you could ever use already. Don?t believe it, take some time to count your blessing and write them down. Before long you will end up with a book that includes many things except for the ones that you want the most. The sound of little feet on your hardwood floors.

Believe it or not, lots of people wouldn?t even know we were in a recession if it wasn?t being reported every hour of the day on television. We would just think that gas prices have gone up and that there is a cow shortage causing milk prices to rise. Think for a minute how differently things might be should we be focusing on our gains rather than our losses. And while you and your partner may be doing fine right now and worried about lay off ? this isn?t a worry that will go away when the recession ends. In fact, millions of people ? good people who happen to be parents ? lose their job every year whether we are in a recession or not. And while it feels like the end of the world, it isn?t! With perseverance, creativity, stamina and something like children to feed at home you will find that you are able to get by for as long as it takes.

Financial analysts are scratching their heads at this article. They worry that the author is half mad, perhaps blissfully unaware of just how bad things are. In many aspects that is true largely in part because there are children around who make the recession seem like nothing more than a boil on the butt of life. There is also the quite obvious realization that waiting for your ship to come in, waiting for the right time and over planning life is just another form of procrastination. Life rarely goes as planned and most of the time; especially when your children are born; this is an amazing gift.

However, in spite of all their bells, whistles, gimmicks and flashing lights – to be a ‘good toy’, a modern toy still needs to provide hours of play. Of course, from a parent’s point of view it helps if the toy provides value for money, stimulates imagination, encourages creative thinking, develops hand to eye coordination, helps the child to learn through play and does not end up being a very expensive dust collector. Of course keeping the child quiet may be an additional bonus.

For children, a ‘good toy’ is one that all their friends want, one that incorporates the latest technology, one that has really cool features, one that integrates well with the virtual world (everything has to have its own website these days, don’t you know!).

Moreover, much like beauty lying in the eyes of the beholder, the true measure of a ‘good toy’, lies with the person who will be playing with it. Therefore, getting the right toy for a particular child can be more important than purchasing something that is merely popularly thought of as a ‘good toy’. So, perhaps the most important tip or piece of advice you can offer anyone looking for a ‘good toy’ is to buy very much with a particular child in mind. For instance, heed age recommendations.

Yes, you may think that your child (nephew, cousin etc.) is super advanced and could easily play with something designed for ‘older children’. However, be aware that whilst this is sometimes the case, toys go through rigorous testing and one of the quickest ways in which to guarantee a child will become bored with a toy is if they are frustrated and cannot play it or use it.

If you are shopping for babies or toddlers do also be aware that anything you buy them will inevitably go straight into their mouth – hence the age labelling and an emphasis on the choking hazard presented by small parts. When it comes to responsible fatherhood, we must check ourselves and ask if we are teaching our kids the right thing?the right morals and values. The last thing I want to see as a responsible father is my son growing up and not becoming a real man or having an obscure interpretation of how a real man should live his life. On the flip side, I do not want my daughter growing up not knowing how she is to be treated by a man.

Just think about it?how will your children learn this if you don?t teach them? Being an active proponent of responsible fatherhood ensures these lessons are learned.

How do we do it?

The first step towards responsible fatherhood is to be present in your child?s life. What?s the lesson? To your son, it lets him know he is to be present once he is older and has children. To your daughter, it let?s her know what the ?norm? is. It IS ?normal? to have a father present in a family. Don?t let your daughter think otherwise.

The next step towards responsible fatherhood is recognizing what is right or wrong in all of your actions and behavior. To do this, you need to look at yourself from an external point of view. Yes?you must be critical of yourself. Look at all areas of your life and don?t sweep any areas ?under the rug.? Once identified, ensure you are displaying the right actions and behaviors to your children. Additionally, actively teach the right behaviors to your son or daughter. Repetition is the key.

Lastly, achieve responsible fatherhood by enjoying being a father to your children. There is no greater joy than seeing your offspring grow up year after year right before your eyes. Enjoy the special moments and capitalize on the teaching moments. They will become memories that will last a lifetime.

I took a personal pledge over six years ago to be the best father possible to my children. I realized back then one of the ways to be the best father, that responsible father, was to ensure I am teaching them the right thing.
