Experts and autism foundations are urging parents to observe their child for early autism signs. Infants are now known to display signs and symptoms to a certain extent. The earlier autism is detected, the better it is for the child. Programs and therapies can help an autistic child develop its language, social, and other skills affected by autism.

Here are the most common autism signs infants displays:

Difficulty in speaking

As autism affects the language skills, it is expected that the child will have trouble talking. This is the most common of all the autism signs. Infants that cannot produce single words upon reaching 16 months and two-word phrases by 24 months is likely to be autistic.

Do Not Respond to Their Own Name

Generally, infants about 9 months of age can recognize and respond to their own name. If you try to call out your baby’s name and he or she does not respond or react on a regular basis, chances are high that he or she has autism. But this behavior does not automatically indicate that the child has the disorder because it could also mean that your baby has hearing disorder or other problems.

Do Not Babble and Point Upon Reaching 12 Months

Babbling is when an infant is experimenting with uttering sounds of language, but not making identifiable words. These are the “ba-ba-ba-ba” and “ma-ma-ma-ma” sounds that baby produce. Infants are also expected to be pointing at attractive objects and people upon reaching that age.

Have an Unusual Gaze and Do Not Smile

Generally, infants do not appear to see people or objects and so does not make eye contact, but in infants with autism, their gaze tends to be shorter and unusual. They also do not smile, interact with others, and lacks social skills. Try to compare how your child makes eye contact and other facial expressions with other infants in the same age.

Repetitive behaviors and Lining Up Things

This is very common of all the autism signs. Infants like doing things over and over again like opening and closing a door or picking up a thing and putting it back again. They also like to place objects in a straight line like their toys or bottles and cans.

Always remember that it is important to be careful in trying to interpret these autism signs. Infants may display these behaviors but are not autistic at all. It is possible that some of these signs are due to other disorders.

Upon noticing these early autism signs, infants must be evaluated immediately by their doctors or pediatricians. The earlier the child gets help, the better the outcome is likely to be.

This is one of the most common autism signs. Infants with autism would look away if you try to make eye contact with them. Their gaze is also unusual and brief.

Display Lack of Interest in People and Objects

This is one of the distinct features of an autistic infant. They have no interest in most things and would just stare in blank. There are even times when they are disinterested in their parents and do not want to be touched or cuddled. They do not turn their head when their names are being called and do not even smile at their parents.

Some also are not interested in toys, or do not play the toy like it is supposed to. They tend to focus on parts and not the whole toy, like the wheel of car.

Repetitive Movements

Infants with autism like doing things over and over again. You may notice them flapping, head-banging or rocking constantly even while in their cot.

Size of the Head

When you send your baby for general check up, the doctor will measure the size of its head and look for autism signs. Infants that have head that grows abnormally faster than others during the first year of life and possesses other signs of autism, then you should ask your doctor to evaluate your child further for ASD.

Another thing to remember is that if one of the brother or sister of the child was diagnosed with autism, then it is more likely that the child is also autistic.

It is important to remember that no one sign or behavior means autism. Experts say that it is the combination of 2 or more signs or the presence of almost all the autism signs. Infants may display some of the signs and behavior but are not autistic at all.

Most parents notice the early autism signs in infants upon reaching two or three years old. In some cases, parents notice the signs earlier, when their child reach infancy or about 12 to 18 months old. This is because autism varies in degree in every individual and the symptoms it shows.

Aside from these 3 early autism signs in infants, it is also very helpful for parents to observe and compare their child from others in terms of their development. They can evaluate the physical, mental, language, and social developmental standards that normal children achieve. For instance, other one year old children may imitate their parents’ actions when they clap or wave, or respond to their smiles, but you notice your child doesn’t.

A research conducted also showed that an infant who has a brother or a sister diagnosed with autism is more likely to have the disorder also. This is one of the reason in which experts say that autism has a genetic basis. There is also strong evidence that it is caused an abnormal brain development early in the mother’s prenatal life, possibly due to environmental factors such as alcohol, nicotine and drugs.

It is very important for parents to discover the early autism signs in infants so that treatments can be applied immediately. While there is still no know cure for autism, early intervention programs can significantly improve the development of a child.

In the first 3 to 4 months, it is difficult for newborns to put themselves to sleep. There will however be signs that a baby is tired because normally after 10-20 minutes of playtime, which might be just a quiet cuddle or some time stretching out (or even kicking on a blanket), they get tired and want to sleep. Parents need to be on the lookout for signs of wanting to sleep – for instance crying. With time, babies will slowly begin to associate certain activities or processes to sleeping and this will eventually become the routine, but it also takes them a few months before they actually realise that they need rest. Oftentimes a newborn will be fussy because they need sleep, but continually wake themselves just as they?re dropping off.

For instance, it is natural for a newborn to fall asleep while sucking at the breast, a bottle, or a pacifier. The trouble is that when a baby always falls asleep this way, he learns to associate sucking with falling asleep and over time, he cannot fall asleep any other way. This can lead to parents experiencing problems when they try to wean their baby off a pacifier and can lead to thumb sucking in later life, which in turn has been associated with adulthood smoking.

Parents can promote healthy sleep habits by creating sleeping environments and moods for the little ones by rocking them gently, nurturing them or cuddling them to help them fall asleep. After 3 or 4 months its is recommended that parents teach the little ones to learn to fall asleep all by themselves, and this can be achieved by developing a bedtime routine of stories and cuddles is a quiet, dimly lit bedroom.

It is not healthy for new parents to indulge in sleep deprivation like numerous experts might suggest. Instead, sleep when the baby sleeps; something you can easily do if you keep track of the sleeping patterns of the little ones.

The Danger Of Ultraviolet Rays

You might think that a golden-brown tan is the quintessential sign of good health. It’s actually a clear sign of skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays. Over time, too much exposure will eventually cause premature wrinkling and skin blemishes.

There are three types of ultraviolet rays that span a wide spectrum of light: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA and UVB are the most well-known because they directly impact our health. UVA rays penetrate several layers of skin. UVB rays penetrate the surface, but little else. Both types of UV light can damage your baby’s skin beyond the visible signs of sunburns and mild irritation. Over years of exposure, the cellular damage accrues and can even lead to skin cancer.

Using The Right Suntan Lotion

Most sunscreens and suntan lotions have an SPF rating. The abbreviation stands for “sun protection factor.” The rating reflects the number of minutes of protection offered by the product. A simple rule of thumb – though not entirely accurate – is to multiply the SPF rating by twenty. For example, a person who normally burns after fifteen minutes would be protected for 450 minutes while using an SPF 30 sunscreen.

Few people realize that a product’s SPF rating only indicates protection from UVB rays. It does not reflect the product’s ability to protect your infant’s skin from UVA rays. This is an important distinction because UVA rays can be just as damaging.

Another important note: ultraviolet rays can penetrate cloud covers. If you and your baby are enjoying time together at the park on a cloudy day, you should still apply a high-quality sunscreen to her skin.

Fun In The Sun Versus Safe In The Shade

A lot of parents think the sun is unable to cause damage during short periods of exposure. In reality, UV damage accumulates. Even if you and your baby spend five or ten minutes outside, the ultraviolet rays can still penetrate her skin. Because her skin is still fragile, it is more susceptible to cellular damage than your skin.

This is one of the reasons pediatricians suggest limiting babies’ exposure to the sun whenever possible. Stay in the shade. Otherwise, liberally apply a strong sunscreen to your baby’s skin that offers her protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Safeguarding Your Baby’s Eyes

In the same way ultraviolet rays can damage the skin, they can also cause eye problems. Millions of people suffer from cataracts due to prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Keep in mind, your baby’s eyes are extremely sensitive. They need protection. Consider buying sunglasses that provide a guard against ultraviolet light. The darkness of the tint matters less than the UV protection.

Don’t underestimate the power of the sun’s rays. Their warmth may feel comforting against the skin, but they penetrate the surface and cause damage. Your baby relies upon you to help ensure she’s protected. If you intend to spend time outside, ask your little one’s pediatrician for sunscreen recommendations.
