Christian home schooling is a popular trend among Christian families seeking an alternative to the secular public education offered in the United States. There are a variety of reasons why you may want to ‘enroll’ your child in your own home school experience, but questions often remain about how to get started.

One of the biggest questions asked by prospective home school parents is about the legality of home schooling. The immediate answer is the home schooling is legal in all fifty states. That’s the easy answer. Each state, however, has different laws about the application of home schooling and some are stricter than others. The very first step in your process must be to review the specific laws in your state. You may find that the laws in your state are so restrictive that it makes a positive home school experience impossible.

The next step is for you to due your own due diligence on the home schooling issue. Find at least six books to review and get a good background regarding home schooling. Do not be afraid to pick up some books that are against home schooling, understanding both sides will help you make a more informed decision. Two of the first books that I read were Dumbing Us Down (John Taylor Gatto) and Home School (Borg Hendrikson).

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, for Christian home schooling to be successful you must get the advice of your pastor / spiritual leader. They will end up providing you with an immense amount of support and resources and it is wise to approach them before making a final decision. They will also be able to connect you to fellow parishioners who will be able to assist you in your early days.

Jonas Weaver is a veteran Christian home school parent who has helped many parents get started in their home schooling experience. He currently is supporting and advising a new Christian Home Schooling blog Christian Homeschool.

According to statistics compiled by MSNBC there were more babies born in 2007 than in any other year during history. Suffice it to say that there were quite possibly a great many people who had a secret inkling of the impending recession whose hormones and biological clocks were ticking with accuracy. History tells us with the Great Depression and the Energy crisis of 1976 that during a recession there is a remarkable dip in the amount of babies born. And of the babies born during a recession, more pregnant mothers and newborns experience health problems attributed to less health care and a lack of nutrition from pinching pennies on grocery bills. This definitely makes great coffee house conversation or round table political banter; however there is more to consider than money when the time to have children is right.

Women have been led to believe for years that there is a small window of time when their eggs are peaking. After this fertile time, these same women are told that they will have problems conceiving, risk of genetic birth defects and higher incidences of pregnancy related problems that could lead to still birth or miscarriage. If you are one of those women who are in the midst of their fertile time, waiting for the recession to clear can feel like an eternity. And the what if?s are endless. Not to mention, that this current recession might not be a recession at all and just merely a friendly reminder from the universe that we have to live a bit simpler to experience true happiness in our lives.

Still, one would think with more people unemployed and more people spending time at home to avoid the costs of going out that a baby boom would ensue. What are all these couples doing home alone for endless hours if they are not having sex? Obviously, the question is whether or not to start a family during a recession. The answer is largely dependant upon who you ask, but here is a snap shot of the opinions of someone with a family that has no financial background and could care less about the politics of money.

No matter what or when, when children come along you will be broke. At the same time, for being broke your children are still fed and wearing decent clothes and your car, although maybe not brand new, somehow gets filled up with gas every week. During those weeks when living paycheck to paycheck is the best you can do, you realize that you have a pantry full of food you may have never thought about eating and that as long as you have coffee to keep you awake ? you are easily satisfied. And, the kids ? they don?t notice the recession at all unless mom and dad are always complaining.

No matter where you live or how much money is in your savings account, the basic things that children need can be provided for by loving parents. Yes, children can make the lack of money more frustrating and more noticeable but there is more to a family than finances. In a perfect world, everybody would have the house, SUV, fenced in yard, bulging 401K and the rainy day funds to weather any storm life has to offer. But, for most people with integrity and morals, they get by during a recession just fine. While having a child may be expensive, for most couples it is a replacement for other things that are expensive like getting your nails done or having a useless golf membership. (Sorry guys) The adage, the more you make the more you spend stands true and waiting until you make more only indicates that it will take more to support you. This forces you in to an endless circle of thinking and rethinking the choice to start your family. And when one day finally comes, when the world is financially balanced ? it might just be too late.

As expensive as children are to raise, it shouldn?t cause this feeling of doom for couples thinking about a family. You have to have some faith in your abilities, your support system and in the sheer evidence that your previous life has given you ? which is that you will be okay and provided for. No, not the law of attraction where you imagine your future and wait for it to fall into your lap ? but the law of life that has proven to give you more than you could ever use already. Don?t believe it, take some time to count your blessing and write them down. Before long you will end up with a book that includes many things except for the ones that you want the most. The sound of little feet on your hardwood floors.

Believe it or not, lots of people wouldn?t even know we were in a recession if it wasn?t being reported every hour of the day on television. We would just think that gas prices have gone up and that there is a cow shortage causing milk prices to rise. Think for a minute how differently things might be should we be focusing on our gains rather than our losses. And while you and your partner may be doing fine right now and worried about lay off ? this isn?t a worry that will go away when the recession ends. In fact, millions of people ? good people who happen to be parents ? lose their job every year whether we are in a recession or not. And while it feels like the end of the world, it isn?t! With perseverance, creativity, stamina and something like children to feed at home you will find that you are able to get by for as long as it takes.

Financial analysts are scratching their heads at this article. They worry that the author is half mad, perhaps blissfully unaware of just how bad things are. In many aspects that is true largely in part because there are children around who make the recession seem like nothing more than a boil on the butt of life. There is also the quite obvious realization that waiting for your ship to come in, waiting for the right time and over planning life is just another form of procrastination. Life rarely goes as planned and most of the time; especially when your children are born; this is an amazing gift.

Parents faced with choosing a daycare for their child have a wide variety of locations available to them for placement. Sometimes the most difficult choice is whether to go with a private, in-home daycare or a public daycare. There are pros and cons to each option and ultimately only a parent knows the child well enough to make the correct decision.

Private Daycare

Private daycare typically has the advantage of a smaller student-teacher ratio. Normally, a mother who is staying home with her own child will take in more children to care for to supplement the family’s income. The benefit is more attention and a closer bond between provider and child. Unfortunately, this can also be detrimental if the provider shows favoritism to her own child.

Most states require the private home daycare to be licensed before any services can be provided. Rigorous checks of food preparation, toy safety and a safe environment are conducted. If a private daycare is an option being considered it is best to make sure that it has a current state-operating license.

Private daycares are usually less expensive than public daycares and have longer, more varied hours. A parent who works the night shift will have an extremely difficult time finding public daycare that is willing to watch a child overnight. Holiday schedules can also be different and more flexible than in a public facility. Check with the potential private daycare provider about their holiday hours.

One challenge of private daycare is the potential for unexpected days when it is closed. Normally, this occurs because the teacher is ill. If the parents’ jobs are flexible and willing to allow the employee to take the day off with little to no notice it may not be such a factor. However, if having the daycare suddenly closed would be detrimental to a parent’s job, it may be worth considering the public option.

Public Daycare

With a higher student-teacher ratio, public daycares sometimes get put down for not providing enough individualized attention. States mandate the minimum student-teacher ratio from six weeks old through high school and public daycares are required to disclose and follow those guidelines. Although the interaction may not be 1:1, students typically receive the same love and care as in a smaller daycare setting. Parents may actually prefer that there is another adult or teacher’s aide in the classroom at all times.

There are some benefits in choosing a public daycare that are not found in most private, in-home daycares. Some of those benefits may include the following: increased socialization with other children, newer toys and equipment, and reliable, set hours. These benefits typically make for a safer, more stable environment.

With the benefits of public daycare comes the major con to this option. Typically, a public daycare is much more expensive than a private home daycare. With weekly full-time tuition in the hundreds of dollars for most well known public daycares, the cost alone can be prohibitive. Although there may be state subsidies available not all families qualify for such credit. It often requires that parents weigh the cost of tuition vs. the cost of working outside the home.

Whatever option parents decide on, the most important thing is that the child is in a safe, loving environment. Whether that environment is found in a private or public daycare is truly a personal choice. Parents should trust their instincts about a daycare and make the decision that is most beneficial for their family.

According to experts, over 60 percent of Americans are overweight, 31 percent are obese, and nearly 4 million weigh 300 pounds or more. It?s obvious that Americans are literally ?living large.?

This new found girth should surprise no one. Large portions of cheap food are just a drive-thru away. Most of our hobbies involve sitting in front of a video screen. And you?ll be hard pressed to find a job that doesn?t have us tethered to a desk and slaving away over a computer. As a society we eat poorly and exercise infrequently.

Sadly, this blubber-welcoming lifestyle is affecting our nation?s children. Childhood obesity rates are on the rise and so are the diseases associated with them. Now more than ever, parents must actively watch their children?s weight.

Parenting Fun 411 has compiled a list of the best things you can do to fight childhood obesity. These tips will help you teach your children the benefits of eating healthy and exercising.

Before proceeding, be aware that these tips are meant to combat the fat, not to cure it. If your child is morbidly obese you need to see a doctor. Our tips are still applicable but only after your child has sought professional help.

Be A Role Model – Your kids follow your lead. So you must set a good example. That means you need to eat healthy. You need to exercise. You need to eat multiple servings of vegetables a day. You need to get out from in front of the television. You must do all the things you want your kids to do. After all, if you want your children to fight off childhood obesity you must be fighting obesity too.

Don?t Compare – Don?t compare your kids to other kids. It?s detrimental to both their present and future self esteem. You set up your children for a lifetime of measuring their self-worth by comparing it to others. Not all kids, even kids the same height, are meant to be the same shape and/or weight. Everyone is different. So do your kids a big favor and only compare them to themselves.

Moderation – Getting your kids to fight off childhood obesity doesn?t mean they can never have a cookie or they can never play a video game. What it means is they need balance in their life. Instead of three cookies, they take one. Instead of spending all day playing video games, they play for an hour. Living healthy includes being happy and having fun, and sometimes that comes in the form of junk food and sedimentary activities.

No Diets, Food Choices – You generally don?t want to put your kids on a diet. Instead you want to teach them about making smart food choices that will stay with them over the course of a lifetime. Teach them the importance of regular servings of fruits and vegetables and the difference between proteins and carbohydrates. Ultimately, you want them to know what they are putting into their bodies and you want them only eating when they?re hungry.

Don?t Reward Your Kids With Food – Rewarding your kids with food will cause them to not only eat every time they?re happy but every time they?re sad too. In fact, they will equate food with strong emotions and that?s never good. You want your kids to eat only when they?re hungry. Now, children inherently know that they should eat only when their hungry. However, they lose that ability because adults force them to do stuff like clean their plate or eat when they are already full.

Include Your Children In The Meal Process – Assuming they?re of the proper age, and they have the inclination, include your children in the shopping and preparation of meals. Take them with you when you shop for produce. During your visits to grocery stores compare the labels of healthy foods to junk foods. If they enjoy it, have your kids assist you in preparing meals. That?s a great way to get them excited about eating healthy.

Find Enjoyable Physical Activities – As any adult can attest too, doing exercises and jogging are boring. So to get your child off the couch find something they enjoy doing?something that gets their heart rate up and causes them to break a sweat. If your kid isn?t into popular sports like soccer or basketball, find something else they like, maybe skateboarding or lacrosse. If that still doesn?t work it?s time to get creative. If your kid is a big fan of video games like Halo and Call of Duty maybe they would like to try paintball. There?s no excuse for your kid to be on the couch and inactive.

?What are we to do with our teen this summer?? Many parents wonder. They are looking for a place that offer personal growth and independence but in a safe place, away from the pressures of today. Well the answer has been around a long time, its Summer Camp! Yep, Summer Camp!

Parents of teenagers can find a summer camp that suits the needs of their child. Specialty camp like soccer camp, space camp, science camp, math camp, music camp, are all great at teaching a skill. Yet, traditional summer camp are general camps where camps have fun and work on self development. Wisconsin Camps like Swift Nature Camp a Teen Summer Camp offers coed summer camp programs that are just for teenaged campers up to 15 years of age. A Counselor in Training Program offers a transition for teens aged 16 and 17 (provides leadership training).

Like its summer camp programs for preteens, Swift Nature Camp offers an amazing range of camp activities. Hiking, climbing, ceramics, horseback riding, tennis, kayaking, and whitewater rafting are among the most popular programs among teen campers.

Summer camps with programs for teens can provide a special opportunity for them to make friends in a relaxed and fun-filled environment, build self-esteem and independence, and meet the challenge of new adventures.

Swift Nature Camp offers teen cabin mates to leave camp together and venture into the wild. The ideal location brings opportunities to take unforgettable trips to the Apostle Islands, the International Wolf Center, and the Mississippi River. These trip are wonderful ways to build bonds among the campers. But more importantly, it helps each child feel a part of the team and want to make a contribution.

All children, especially those in their teenage years, need a break from the accelerating competition of today’s world. An intimate, friendly and noncompetitive environment for teens fosters positive encouragement. The atmosphere of acceptance brings a welcome balance to young lives. Even first time campers quickly and smoothly adjust to life as a camper in this kind of setting.

Today’s teens grow up too fast and need time to play. An Adventure Summer Camp should challenge your teen to try new things, but not in a stressful way. Camp is not school! Interaction with animals can be a perfect way for a child to learn by the natural discovery of play. Besides all the fun and excitement of a traditional camp, the kids have the joy of discovering Nature and the world we live in.

After living life in a beautiful natural setting among caring staff and instructors, teens come to love summer camp. Many teen campers return summer after summer, returning to see friends and enjoy the excitement, self-direction, and goofy fun characteristic of camp life.

Summer camp is a great place to be oneself and a perfect place to make lifelong friends. Teens come to love summer camp and look forward to time away from the pressures of performance, and the change to rediscover themselves.

So you have selected the Best Overnight Summer Camp for your child. You did all the research and had your child help in the selection. Yet, preparing for camp involves more than just packing their clothes in a suitcase. You want to be sure that your kid is emotionally prepared for this Summer Camp Adventure.

Getting your child ready for camp requires a delicate balance. Talking about this exciting new experience is great but, you also don’t want to overdo it. Over discussing Summer Camp can cause, children to loose a sense of reality, lead to expectations and fantasies that can’t be met, thus, leading to disappointment. It’s also possible that these discussions continually highlight fears which, lead only to an increase of homesickness. Several months before the beginning of camp you may want to start your discussions but not much before April. As receive pre-camp information it’s wise to share these with your child.

Camp Conversations: Choose your words wisely when you are talking about overnight summer camp. Children are very perceptive, and they feel your concerns and fears. You don’t even have to make a negative comment and they know. Visit your library, rent a movie or pick up books about camp. Watch or read them together. Remember, most of the story lines are exaggerated, but they can be a good segway on how to handle situations at camp.

However, make sure to pick up on the subtle signals that your child sends. If they seem put off by the books or videos, then drop the subject. Most importantly, make sure that you never use camp as a threat or in anger. It’s important that you never seem like you’re counting the days until your child leaves for camp. The words can linger longer than you think, and it will confuse your child about what camp is supposed to be. Your child should believe that camp is a fun experience and that is why you have chosen it.

Some Dos: * Do try to have your child meet the camp director before camp begins.

* Only talk in a positive way, they need to know you trust camp to be a safe, exciting place.

* continue to have sleepovers with family and friends.

* Do continue to have short separations, such as sleepovers with family and friends for good practice.

* Do allow your child to verbalize her concerns, even if they sound silly. You may learn about worries that you can easily resolve.

* Talk to a former camper about summer camp. They can tell you what camp is really like from a kids point of view.

Some Don’ts: * Don’t introduce anything else new in your child’s life. Try to keep everything as normal as possible, especially in the time close to the opening day.

*Squeeze in a family vacation just before camp starts is never a good idea. Plan to be at home for a few days before your lid leaves to go to camp. This provide the comfort of a usual routine.

* Don’t let your child suspect you have concerns about his adjustment.

These are just a few ideas that can help you as you send your child to Summer Camp for the first time. To learn more be sure to visit www.SummerCampAdvice.com

So, you want to have a baby?

There comes an age and time in life when every person coupled or otherwise considers the question of whether or not to have a child. For some people, this is a no-brainer and they know from the time they are very young that children are in their future. For others, it is once that causes distress, concerns and worries because the urge is just not there. And still, for others it becomes an impossibility or an accidental decision. Having a baby is a huge step in life often seen as the entrance to the threshold of adulthood. There is lots of pressure, silent and outward, on people to have a baby and it is almost as if choosing otherwise is some sort of abomination.

In today?s world where men and women are becoming more equal, financially independent and are encouraged to develop passions outside of hearth and home the sheer thought of having a baby can be disgruntling. Regardless of what you think, what you have been told or what your imagination dreams of your future to be ? having a child changes everything in more ways than imaginable. Some of those ways are more positive than you thought possible and others can be frustrating leaving parents to feel as if they have just entered a life sentence. Which in so many ways, they have.

The crazy thing about the decision to have children is it isn?t one that can be made early in life. It can?t be a set as a feasible goal because life changes so quickly. One minute you are in high school, college and pursuing a career-thinking babies are the enemy and a year later you are so deeply in love that you can?t imagine not sharing this special feat with that someone special. Furthermore once you make the decision to have a child and follow through, there is absolutely no turning back to the life you left. It is an all or nothing endeavor.

For intensive purposes, it is probably best to weigh the pros and cons of having children before you embark on the journey. Unfortunately, it is like concocting a travel plan to Pluto, because you don?t know the real pros and cons of having children until you do so. How could you, really? Even people who have children can?t really find the words or pinpoint the feelings of watching a birth or witnessing a first step. Having children is one of those things in life that is indefinable and felt differently by every person. It is the inhuman mixture of love and passion, fear and worry, excitement and anxiety, frustration and stress.

At the risk of sounding trite, the best way to decide whether or not having children is your destiny or not is to allow your destiny to just unfold. Keeping an open mind and realizing that should the embodiment of a child be right for you it will show itself to you at some point ensures you will not be pressured, disappointed or anxious about it. In other words, never say never and don?t place all your genetic eggs in one basket. When the time is right to have children, whether on purpose or accidentally, it will happen. Sometimes the best way to choose whether or not to become a parent and to decide if you are ready for it or not is to face the music when it begins to play.

Contrary to what you may believe in this moment, ten years ago or five years from now ? having children may or may not be important in your life. Even the best laid plans can fail which means that the little pink line that says a baby is coming can and does happen to people who are both sides of the fence when it comes to this issue.

Your ultimate decision and desire to have children is one that only you can make. Having faith that the right things in your life will happen, in the proper order and that whatever your future holds, either with children or otherwise, will be happy and abundant is the best stance to take on the issue. Who knows, your decisions and thoughts are as uncertain as summer rains in the dessert and you just never really know all the answers in life for sure.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, in the United States today, more than half of all mothers with young children work. Working mothers have become the rule, rather than the exception yet ask around any office and you?ll find that guilt is the number one emotion many working moms struggle with. Guilt that they missed their baby take his first step, that they can?t be room mother at school or that they?re not there when the kids get off the school bus.

Part of the problem is societal; for decades working mothers have been blamed for the neglect of their children, the breakdown of the family. But study after study has proven that kids of working moms are happy, healthy and thriving. I say it?s time for working moms to lose the guilt once and for all.

Mommy Guilt is Normal, but Useless

In today?s bleak economy, even more mothers are working full-time, with longer hours, or taking second jobs just to make ends meet. For many women, working isn?t a choice, it?s an economic reality and guilt becomes just one more pressure on already overburdened women.

For other women, their career is an integral part of who they are. For them, it?s hard to imagine life as a stay-at-home mom. But the stresses of managing childcare and managing the household, on top of work responsibilities, can add to the sense of overwhelm many working mothers feel.

Just this morning, a co-worker?s eyes welled up with tears in my cube as she told me about how she had just fired her nanny after not showing up for work multiple times and the new one showed up an hour late on her first day. What my co-worker wants is to simply be able to concentrate on work while at her job and focus on the family when at home, and not feel torn no matter where she is or what she?s doing.

Here?s the good news: losing the guilt will make you a better worker and a better mother.

Day Care Isn?t Damaging

The latest studies show working women and their children are doing just fine. A 2005 Texas University Study found no difference in development between children of working and stay-at-home moms. A better predictor of how a child will do is their home environment and household income. It should be reassuring to know that the paycheck Mom brings home is making a big difference in everyone?s life. And remember that it?s more important to focus on what?s going on at home when you?re there, than when you?re not.

Dads are Doing More

Working moms would be wise to take a cue from working dads. Guilt isn?t a daily emotion for most of them, and instead they?re proud of the time they do spend with their kids.

According to a study by the Families and Work Institute, Gen X fathers spend an hour more a day with their kids than fathers did 25 years ago. Today?s dads are taking on more of the parenting duties — and kids are better for it even if their clothes don’t always match.

If Mom?s Happy Everybody?s Happy

Many women get great satisfaction from their jobs. Despite the pangs of guilt they may feel, statistics show working women are healthier and less depressed than nonworking moms. Moms who enjoy their work also set a good example for their children, modeling how to handle a busy, successful career.

Isn?t it time to focus on making the most of the time you have at work and at home?

Are you the parent of a teen, namely a female teen? If you’re, has your teenager ever discussed entering into a beauty festival before? If she lately has, have you given her a call yet? For many moms and pops, their first is no way, but you need to know that beauty competitions are all not as bad as they appear. When it comes to determining whether you need to let your teenager enter a beauty competition or maybe a number of them, you need to know that there are a number of benefits and disadvantages to doing so. One of those pros or and sides is the undeniable fact that it is something that your teen wants to do.

If your teen was the one that brought up a beauty competition then there’s a fair chance that it is something that interests them. Another one of many pros or plus sides to permitting your teenager enter a beauty festival or maybe a number of them is due to the rewards. What’s pleasant about beauty festivals is that you do not just get a prize or a ribbon, but you also get a money prize reward. Rather than money, some beauty festivals even give out grants.

If your kid has an interest in making their own cash or if they’re inquisitive about going to varsity, a beauty competition may be in a position to assist them in achieving their goals. While there are a number of pros to letting your teenager enter into beauty festivals, there are a number of cons or downsides to doing so also. One of those drawbacks is the work that goes into attending beauty competitions. Now, if your teenager was only inquisitive about competing in a local pageant, this would possibly not be as big an issue for you.

there are beauty festival families out there who really spend some time traveling across the land taking part in beauty festivals. While you and your teenager can do this if you’d like, it frequently places lots of stress, both emotional and money, on all family members. Another one of the cons or drawbacks to permitting your teenager to take part in a beauty festival is the result. Sadly , it appears as there’s a stereotype related to beauty festivals. Many people only believe that beauty festivals are for people that are breathtakingly lovely or thin.

Maybe , this is due partly to the fashion industry and many beauty competition judges. Though your teenager can take part in a beauty festival if she wants to, no matter what her appearance is, it is something you may wish to take under consideration. For youths, there’s nothing worse or more damaging to one’s self confidence if they’re told or made to feel as if they are not pretty or accomplished enough. In accordance with the competition your teen may find it quite tough to jump right into beauty festivals. A fair number of the kids who take part in beauty competition have done so since they used to be a toddler or primary school aged. While not necessarily, these players are usually rather more likely to see success than someone that latterly made a decision to enter a beauty festival.

Naturally, that does not imply that your teenager can’t place high or perhaps win a beauty competition, but it means that they could have lots of difficult work before them. The above discussed good points and bad points are only a few of many that exist. If your teenager has lately asked you if they could play a role in a beauty competition, it is something you and the remainder of your folks may wish to seriously consider or at least closely inspect.
