Stroller Urban: Mountain Buggy

The Mountain Buggy stroller urban is a heavy-duty brand of strollers made in New Zealand since 1992. They are specifically designed for outdoor use and are ideal for use on difficult surfaces such as sandy beaches, rock trails, and wet grass.

The Mountain Buggy Stroller Urban double is far and away the most popular Mountain Buggy stroller. It features two front swivel wheels which makes it very maneuverable in crowded spaces, individually reclining seats, and a one year warranty on frame.

The main selling point for all mountain buggy strollers is durability and the quality of materials. You can expect this stroller to outlast your children’s early years and you will be able to resell it or pass it along to a family member. The best kept secret however, is that most Mountain Buggy Strollers can be adapted to accommodate infants. This feature (which is sold separately) is called a ‘Carry Cot system’. The seat in the stroller can be replaced by a bassinet (that the New Zealanders call a ?cot?) with is outfitted with handles. Since the bassinet allows the infant to lie flat, you can easily stroll with newborns. After strolling, you simply lift out the bassinet without disturbing your sleeping child!

Mountain Buggy strollers also feature padded bench style seats (as opposed to the ’sling-style’ seats found in true jogging strollers). This style of seat provides more back support and this works best for most toddlers who prefer to sit up straight and look around while strolling. (To be fair, this works for Mountain Buggy strollers because they are not intended for jogging! Most jogging strollers use sling style seats which do not provide as much support but are a great deal lighter than bench style seats.)

Mountain Buggy also provides quite a number of accessories for its strollers. These items are sold separately and include bedding, handlebar extensions, attachable handbrakes, child bumper bar, and the car seat adaptor. Some may argue that handbrakes and appropriate handle bar heights should be standard on an expensive stroller.

The complaints that you will hear about a Mountain Buggy stroller seem to revolve around three things: the canopy, the stroller size, and the price. The canopies are not as well built as the other components and do not extend far enough to give good coverage from early morning or late afternoon sun. The canopy also does not stay locked in the retracted position but tends fall down when the stroller goes over bumps. The rugged construction also leads to size and weight issues. While most models have quick release wheels, these strollers are still quite bulky when folded down, and do not fit easily into the trunks of small cars.

You can expect to pay over $400 for a Mountain Buggy single stroller and more than $650 for a double stroller. Alternative strollers in this price range include the top of the line models of the very best brands including the Chariot Carrier CX series, Baby Jogger City Series, and the Bob Revolution. However, these competing strollers (with the exception of the Revolution) are mainly designed for running and jogging.

If you have the money on hand and spend lots of time outdoors, a good choice for you may be a Mountain Buggy stroller urban.
