Creating a Little Boy’s Nursery: Go White and Then Go Bright!
White baby bedding used to make one of two impressions; it was synonymous either with wealth, and elegance (like snowy white rugs and dazzling white sofas) or with hygiene and uniformity (as in cold hospitals and dreary orphanages). This is certainly no longer true today, in this age of greater creativity, lessened formality, and the desire to provide as much visual stimulation as possible for our developing infants.
Parents these days often choose to use white linens when preparing a son’s nursery because it functions as a sort of blank canvas for their decorating art. In much the same way that a man’s plaid shirt looks awful with a loud checked tie, a set of patterned or brightly colored linens limits what can be done in the rest of baby’s room without causing it to look much too “busy”.
Some parents want to have a sky painted on their son’s ceiling – complete with a sun and fluffy clouds or a moon and dozens of little stars. Others prefer wallpapered walls to painted ones, and want to be able to indulge in the most elaborate and colorful designs in the wallpaper books. Needing to avoid unattractive clashes between various room elements, these are the ideal candidates for contemporary white baby boy bedding.
Another possibility moms and dads may envision is the use of child-safe, washable paints on the walls to create lively images or dramatic abstract designs. This is not only a highly decorative approach, but can also be a way of coping with a toddler’s wall crayoning tendencies later on! Nevertheless, with all these exciting alternatives to contemplate, parents must not allow their artistic enthusiasm to overshadow the responsibility of safeguarding their son’s safety.
Well known to experienced parents, but urgent to add for novices, is the fact that there are significant health concerns to keep in mind when shopping for crib bedding. There must be no over-sized sheets which can slip off and become tangled around the baby, and there must be no significant puffiness in the coverlet or crib bumpers which could impair baby’s respiration. Finally, all nursery items should be free from substances which can provoke allergies or which can affect his physical or cognitive development.
The best course, for the reasons above and for the health of the parental pocketbook as well, is to purchase items which are packaged in complete sets, since their manufacturers are more likely to adhere to safety standards and have larger operations that allow them to charge less. So buy the sets you need in one of the oh-so-numerous styles of white bedding, and then splash colors on the rest of the room to your heart’s content!
Unexpectedly, every person at the baby shower has provided you with bedding. You become overwhelmed by the mountain of comforters and variety of sheet sets you have received. The problem rears its head again and the new parents are overcome with grief simply trying to choose baby bedding.
Crib bedding that you buy within a bigger ensemble will ensure that you’re not anxious about how you’re going to decorate your baby girl’s nursery. Most linen sets come with sheets, blankets and bumpers that exceed safety standards. A safe start for your baby is the primary concern when choosing linens which are of standard dimensions and are made from chemical-free, hypoallergenic materials.
